OSHA has mandated the implementation of the Globally Harmonized System (GHS) to be fully implemented by the end of 2015. This is an international label and data sheet that will accompany all hazardous chemical materials. The aim is to reduce injury and death due to confusion caused by inconsistencies in labeling in different parts of the world.

The law calls for all employees who are exposed to chemically hazardous materials in the workplace be instructed in interpretation of the label and data sheets before December 1 of this year. These labels are already being implemented by chemical manufacturers, importers and distributors of hazardous substances as they prepare to meet the 2015 deadlines, and it is important that workers understand them when they encounter them. OSHA has released two free training videos that may be used for this purpose.
